"Design Matters"

Practice Profile

We are boutique architectural studio based in Brisbane, Queensland. Founded in 1991 as Guy Williams Architects, we evolved into gwarchitects in 2003.

For over 25 years our aim has remained the same, that is to provide a high-quality, efficient and progressive multi-disciplinary practice based on traditional architectural principles and high-quality personal service, meeting the needs of, and creating value for, every client.

We specialise in Architecture and Design, Project Management and Interior fitouts. We service the SE Queensland and Northern NSW areas and have the capability and experience to handle projects ranging from the small and delicate, through to the larger and more complex.

Our client relationships are important to us and our client-centric service model and company philosophy are testimony to this.

As part of our on-going commitment of providing ‘best practice’ outcomes for our clients, we are a certified ‘A+’ practice member of the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA). Guy Williams has also been elevated to a ‘Fellow’ of the Institute, for his many years of service to the profession and the industry. As such, we proudly conform to the Institute’s ‘Code of Ethics’ and ‘Environmental Policy’, recognising our on-going obligations to the wider community and the environment.

The office management systems, procedures and policies adopted and implemented by this practice are based upon the standards and procedures as recommended and set out in the AIA Practice Policies and the Architect’s Act of Queensland.

We also conform to a quality management system based upon the International Standard AS/NZS ISO 9001.2000. This ensures consistent and efficient service within our practice and across all of our projects, and enables us as a PQC (Level 3) Certified Provider with the Queensland Government.

gwarchitects has retrospective professional indemnity and public liability insurance covers in place – details are available upon request.

Why Choose Us?

We value the relationship between client and architect and understand the trust placed in our abilities. Our focus is therefore to understand our client’s needs and to create outcomes that help them achieve their goals and create value through architecture. We do this by providing an experience that involves the client at every stage.

We believe that good design must be responsible and strive to meet all of our client’s needs through holistic, user-friendly and economical design solutions that suit all budgets and styles.

We analyse materials and construction methods, as well as the prevailing site conditions and innovative building systems, to develop a functional and economic design strategy. This practical strategy ensures all of our buildings function well over time, resulting in energy efficient, yet creative, design solutions.

We offer personal service and a unique ‘hands-on’ approach to every job. Our quality skillset is wide and varied, including providing:

  • feasibility studies and design consultations;
  • accessibility and adaptive design solutions;
  • sustainable and eco-friendly design solutions;
  • innovative and budget sensitive design solutions;
  • detailed documentation and contract (project) management;
  • material, colour and fitout selection.

We are also very proud that traditional hand-drawn documentation methods still have an important role within our practice, yet we embrace the latest contemporary digital documentation techniques where and when necessary.

We feel that this combination of skills, complimented with experienced and professional staff, and up-to-date technical support, has produced an exceptional and efficient design and management team.

This has helped us to develop a well-respected working relationship with many satisfied clients, builders, consultants and local building authorities, and has led to us establishing a solid reputation for providing our projects on time and within budget, yet not compromising on the quality of design or building finishes.

Who are we?

Raised and educated in Brisbane, ‘local‘ architect Guy Williams began his career working in a number of highly-regarded architectural practices in South-East Queensland and the United Kingdom. In 1991 he founded Guy Williams Architects, which evolved into gwarchitects in 2003.

Guy prides himself on being a Brisbane ‘local’ architect and he is passionate about design solutions, particularly those that are specific to local environmental, building and statutory conditions. He is also proud of his ability to bring a team together, and gives every project that enters the office his utmost personal attention.

Guy is responsible for the day-to-day running of the practice and its creative direction. Over his professional career, Guy has been involved in the implementation of many highly successful and award-winning public and private projects, many of which can be viewed on our ‘Projects’ pages.
