Clayfield College – PE Centre
New Physical Education Centre
After identifying the need for expansion, Clayfield College purchased the old Clayfield Bowling Centre. We were commissioned by the College to convert it into a state-of-the-art PE Centre.
The brief called for the inclusion of a competition grade gymnastics arena, as well as international standard basketball, netball, volleyball and badminton courts. All of which could be viewed by spectators throughout the building and on television. They also required an upmarket fitness club, a sports medicine clinic, change rooms, as well as kitchen and cafe facilities. Offices and classrooms were also to be incorporated to augment the centre’s dual educational and commercial roles.
All of this was to be housed in a ‘signature’ building, which also manifested the status of the college and its traditions.
Various design strategies and concepts were studied and accepted, with the final design fully satisfying the brief and adding more. The building, on a separate site from the school, could now be accessed via a tunnel under the main road separating the two. The whole school community was embraced and the facility is now used constantly for assemblies and exams when no sports are in training.
We are proud of the smooth integration between the individual spaces within the building as they combine to create a feeling of vibrance and continuity. Moving along the viewing deck under the vaulted roof, the whole space is enhanced by the activities emanating from these spaces, whilst all the time overlooking the action on the central sports area.
The building and its fitout were completed on time and on budget.
